The bass-line from Rick James's Give it to me is very close to the one in Thriller. Would be a valid sample IMO. Rick James's bass-line loop ends every time at another note. One of the ending notes must be identical to the one in Thriller where it ends every time at the same note.

I wish he was still alive, but at the same time, you can't say he didn't get the last laugh. All that crap they talk about? He doesn't have to hear it anymore. PLUS he got the surge of popularity that outshone all the naysayers.
And now in this generation I hear modern artists paying respect to him in this way. I could never be happier. Can't choose my favorites, but a great sample is "Right Here," by SWV, "It ain't hard to tell,," by NAS, and "Watch Me," by Little Brother!!
