I agree that there is at least a nod to DM's "Master and Servant", even more prominently than "Let's Go to Bed" (which seems to be a direct sample to me). To my ears, it's the synth line that starts at 0:16 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsvfofcIE1Q I don't mind one bit - I love that this song has an instant familiarity to it because of the references (if they aren't exact note for note, licensed samples). Though DM's and the Cure's stuff seems so much more innocent now, and that makes me old. |

Yes, this interpolation sounds similar to The Cure "Let's Go To Bed", but I'm pretty sure it is a nod to Depeche Mode's Master & Servant especially because of the subject matter. |

So it's agreed that the original is used as a reference to create something new? Yup, that's an interpolation. Regardless of the new context, if an original source can be cited that the new bit draws inspiration from, it doesn't have to be physically manipulated from the original record. Sample = A portion, a small bit. Not to be confused with sample = part of a recording lifted from a CD or vinyl. Whenever I think of an interpolation, I go back to where I first saw the word > http://www.discogs.com/Method-Man-Featuring-Mary-J-Blige-Ill-Be-There-For-You-Youre-All-I-Need-To-Get-By/release/2516325 Hope it helps. |

A sample to me was always a... sample, a part of the original material - which can then be tweaked and altered if needed to fit the new material it's supposed to be used in. This was an interpretation, pretty much like if she was making a cover of LGTB with a different arrangement of instruments, it's the song's riff but played in another "context" so to speak, not a true manipulation of the sample from the actual song. |

@marcus When you recreate something it's called an interpolation or a replayed sample. This is what this is. |

Not a sample. Just a recreation of the riff. |

Reported the video to replace, because the audio changed? Official video at http://youtu.be/KdS6HFQ_LUc 1:09 in S&M sounds like break beat. |
