fixed! thanks thunder axe!

the time index listed for this (metallica) sample is wrong, clearly it's the bass drone in the intro that he was sampling.

I've just spent 20 minutes listening to the drum break of 8 counts for Rita at 3:37, i'm sure it is in there, but which bit? i dunno.

I also am starting to think that the main drum loop through the whole first bit is constructed from not just Baby don't Cry, but perhaps also bits from 8 counts for Rita, although Splash/Crash (??) is a slightly different pitch, maybe one is splash and the other a crash :) This might also explain how Shadow made it, getting around the vocals being over the drums in Baby Don't Cry.

But there is also a bit in that main drum loop that I can't hear in either of the tracks and if it was already listed, I didn't notice it.

Update on my list; the He 6 and Creations Unlimited sample has been found and The Byrds sample is from the Cut Chemist remix, leaving:

-"On the Run" by Pink Floyd (comments I've read say it's the version from their film "Live at Pompeii")
-"Let Me" by Santana
-"8 Counts for Rita" by Jimmy Smith
-"Liquid Liquid" by Optimo
-"Hill Where the Lord Hides" by Chuck Mangione (apparently sampled on Shadow and Cut Chemist's Brainfreeze Mix)

Man, I didn't even know half of those were sampled in this! This is can be harder than I thought. That, and some of the songs sampled aren't even on Grooveshack, which makes it near impossible to find.

Also, "Get Ready" by He 6.

Nice to see a discussion opening up about The Number Song, here are some tracks supposedly sampled on "The Number Song", but I can't recognize:

-"On the Run" by Pink Floyd (comments I've read say it's the version from their film "Live at Pompeii"
-"Let Me" by Santana
-"8 Counts for Rita" by Jimmy Smith (currently there's a discussion about this)
"Corruption is the Thing" by Creations Unlimited (a comment has stated that the sample taken from this track is the "yeah, yeah..." thing that comes in at 1:57 in "The Number Song"; problem is, I can't find a source for the Creations Unlimited track)
-"Liquid Liquid" by Optimo
-"Hill Where the Lord Hides" by Chuck Mangione
-"Fido" by the Byrds

No, I'm not searching for Orion, I can recognise that. What i'm looking for is what part of the song samples a song called Eight Counts for Rita http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDCf-fD8pwE

Any Metallica-fans on here? They'll recognize it in an instant... pretty sure it's that monotone basslineriff that starts at 0:17 for Metallica, I hear that from 0:03 in Shadow's background...

Drpepperfan said on Friday, 07 May 2010:
I'm thinking perhaps the drums at 0:40.

Peetz said on Friday, 07 May 2010:
I think you're right by saying the drum loop appears at approximately 3:37. Sounds like Dj Shadow has chopped it up a little bit, though, so no wonder it's kind of hard to recognise.

DJ Anubis said on Friday, 07 May 2010:
Have the same problem with drumsamples (and I'm a drummer)... But I think this one's about that intro bassline in both (as someone replied on another youtubevideo of this, sometimes those comments can come very handy, if you ignore the BS posted) Am I the only who can't play this DJ Shadow video past 0:45?

Drpepperfan said on Friday, 07 May 2010:
Actually listening back the bit most likely to have been sampled is the drum solo starting at 3:37. I'm really bad at recognising drum samples though, so can anyone place a time for it?

Drpepperfan said on Friday, 07 May 2010:
I want to fill in the missing gaps on The Number Song, However, I've listened to Eight Counts for Rita and can't find anything in The Number Song from it. If I had to guess, it would have the sampled the countdown 50 seconds in, what with alll the numbers in the song, but the comments on the video say the drums were sampled, although I can't hear any drums that resemble those in the song. Anyone got any ideas?
