This is such a great example of the power of sampling to me... this "Joe" guy writes a song, lays it down one day, and completely vanishes. For all we know he could be listening to it right now or he could be long dead. But the song just sits there for years and years, collecting dust, until Shadow finds it and puts a whole string arrangement behind it and turns it into a kind of dedication to the common man who may not have achieved his dreams, but at least had the courage to try. |

This sample originates from an (apparently) 40-year old studio reel found in an abandoned recording studio in the Bay area that was about to be shut down. The only writing on the reel was some yellow tape labeled "Joe", hence I decided to put Joe as the artist for the original track. The original person who found the reel in the studio and introduced it to Shadow converted it to mp3 and posted it on Soulstrut. I emailed Louis and asked him if I could submit this, and he said yes, so here you go. |
