Pete Rock has said numorous times that Tip was in the room when he made the beat and that Tip saw what records he was using and then went and recreated Pete's beat with the same exact drum break and sample chop. Tip jacked him and should have given him an official credit in the linear notes.

He didn't steal the beat, Pete Rock gave Q-Tip the sample..It is a common practice among producers to trade samples

Thats kinda messed up for Q-Tip to do that. He could have at least given Pete Rock a co-production credit.

Pete Rock made the original version of the beat, but then Q-Tip recreated it for the final version here. It's basically the same thing that happened with Biggie's "Juicy", except Q-Tip gave Pete Rock a shoutout for it within the song ("Pete Rock for the beat, you don't stop").
