Made my first point clear to Marco Polo on his facebook.

Sil van Liere said on Wednesday, 30 January 2013:
disrespectful tsss. Stopping the fans of hiphop from dissecting the music we love is disrespectful to us. Preventing the artists that are sampled from getting any credit is disrespectful to them.

Jay Gumb$ said on Wednesday, 30 January 2013:
@Azhar - Let's hope we don't have to resort to that. Otherwise Whosampled is just going to be a big forum. Your post is probably just going to get deleted anyway.

Jay Gumb$ said on Wednesday, 30 January 2013:
I guess chopping loops from old records isn't disrespectful to those artists and in full violation of ethics but we still respect producers for it when they make good music. Just don't tell us that we're the ones being disrespectful and violating whatever rules you're talking about.

I think if I didn't know that hip hop records used samples then I wouldn't understand what hiphop was all about. Because I know about sampling, I think I'd enjoy the music a lot less if I didn't know what these samples were. If I didn't have anyone to tell me what samples were used, I couldn't look for them all myself so a website like WS is a blessing to me.

Feel free to add if you wish

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Wednesday, 30 January 2013:
So let me get this straight, "posting up samples producers use on your website, blog or forum is disrespectful and in full violation of the rules". Full violation of the rules? And what rules are those? I don't remember there being "rules" written anywhere. Also, if you stand by that logic, then sampling in general is a "full violation of the rules" because you are taking other people's music, creating your own, and not crediting the original artist. But artists such as Marco Polo break that "rule" all the time, therefore he has absolutely NO RIGHT to ask our site to not post the samples he utilizes. Marco Polo, if you ever read this, there are no rules to this game, things that you don't like will happen and you will have to live with it. If you don't understand that there are no rules to this game, then you are the one who "TRULY do[es] NOT understand what Hip Hop is all about".

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Wednesday, 30 January 2013:
Marco Polo just posted this 7 minutes ago to "whom it may concern" (meaning us)
http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151236629784249&id=42853029248
According to Marco Polo, we " TRULY do NOT understand what Hip Hop is all about", haha!

LΛZER said on Wednesday, 30 January 2013:
it surely has something to do with the fear of being sued, or they want the ingredients to be unkown.
but if the producers sample music in a way its recognizable, then its obvious that some people find your samples. even if the samples are blocked here, they are listed somewhere else!

Sil van Liere said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
I think we should make the point about samples being on other sites more clear to artists who want their stuff removed. I'd hate Marco Polo or Damu Da Fudgemunk or Kno being sued by an artist they sampled from. But if , like some of you made clear, their samples are all over the internet, what's the use of silencing us? Is this because Whosampled got so big in the past years?

I don't think any sampling artist will sue the site. They would only if we show an uncleared sample they would rather not see exposed. It would bring attention to their uncleard sample, which is bad for them.

DJ Anubis said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
In fact: consider the worst... Imagine an artist/company sueing WhoSampled... What ground would they have? a website that lists information, freedom of speech, blabla. WhoSampled would even be on CNN, not a bad worst case scenario :D

"Welcome to the Ultimate Database of Sampled Music, Remixes and Cover Songs" -> not really

Jay you make too much sense as usual, your comment +1

Large Pro said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Wouldn't be surprised if some members decides to e-mail some music companies with all uncleared samples of some bigger artists on here.

Seriously you guys are destroying the site. It's not illegal to post the original sources.

Jay Gumb$ said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
By the way my point is that even though Whosampled is SUPPOSED to be the definitive sample database, with all these exclusions, it is not. And if the trend continues then we might as well look to other sites that do list the samples. Nobody is going to take Whosampled seriously if there are other sites where you can find all the samples that are on WS PLUS the samples that are not. Keep taking them down and people might as well look elsewhere.

It's not OUR problem if an artist doesn't want his sample sources discovered. It's THEIR problem. It's OUR problem if we cant list them. So 1 + 1 = 2 (we're solving these artists problems and creating problems for ourselves). If this is supposed to be a win-win for everyone then I guess the admins haven't thought things through enough. It's more like a win-lose situation in favor of the artist. If we do list the samples they aren't losing anything because of us because other sites are going to just list them too.

DJ Anubis said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Dawww, I'm not allowed :( ^^

Jay Gumb$ said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Psh. We could just post them on du-bruit.com if they're not already there.

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Think about it; everyone gets what they wants! The samples are kept a secret from the mass public, but the people who are dedicated enough and found a sample that was used or just really want to know what those artists sampled, can find out! It's a foolproof plan ;)

Sil van Liere said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Ooh, a secret sample society...

antoine.becuwe said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
In that way, we only need to create a blog with producers samples pack and hope it will not be taken down ! ;)

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Is there any way we can make a compilation of all the samples found for Marco Polo that we can keep private? Like just Jay Gumbs, Azhar, Nazgeist (BeatProjekt), Sil van Liere, CellarDoor, antoine.becuwe, L/\ZER and Large Pro? If we could do the same for Snowgoons that would be really cool too. From doing that, we're keeping them to ourselves and not sharing them with the public, which is obviously what Marco Polo's problem is, same with Snowgoons.

Jay Gumb$ said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
If Marco Polo does a song for Nas then Nas' people are going to make sure that the sample is cleared. If Marco Polo does a song for Marco Polo then he can take the risk. I guess.

Azhar said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
I'm guessing it's nothing to do with them then if it's not their song on their album.

LΛZER said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
if you look on k-def's page, its the same. only the samples as an artist are blocked. as a producer not.

Azhar said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
@Anubis, Yea I was thinking the same thing. It looks like he's not fussed about vocal samples/scratches used on hooks, just the main samples. The original samples that he's used for other artists however are still up. Strange.

DJ Anubis said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
It's a good metaphore. Another example: Oddisee is not as big as Premo, but I heard his song on the radio (and not a hiphop station). So I'd consider that a hit. Yet searching this website for the obvious sample turns up nothing... So what I wanna say is: even if someone isn't superfamous it makes the database incomplete and less interesting. People will think tracks that aren't in the biggest sampledatabase are originals, when they're not...

It's a very interesting & complicated discussion.

Btw I don't see a message on this artistprofile about being blocked?

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
If Premo's samples are taken down from this site, it's like killing off a main character in a movie. If the main character dies, there's hardly any continuation in the film or series ._.

Sorry if my metaphor was a bad one, don't know how to explain my view on this any better.

Azhar said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
Hmm, it's only the original samples used from his album he's asked to be taken down?

Large Pro said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
What's the admin's take on this? What if e.g. Premo would request to take away all his samples?

LΛZER said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
look at premo's site here for example. the got over thousands samples here and didn't let them remove. this is how you do it. but we all know he hates those sample diggers who makes it public :)

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Tuesday, 29 January 2013:
I agree completely. I also perfectly understand producers not giving their samples away if they don't want to, it's fun to have a mystery sample making fans want to dig to find it instead of just giving it away. What I don't understand is when producers disallow people from showing the sample they dug and found that the producer used, from the public!

Jay Gumb$ said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
People like this make me feel like I'm doing something wrong. I'm not the one sampling other people's music without their permission. Don't get me wrong, I respect the artform but who are these artists to tell me I'm not supposed to know what records they sampled? Or I can't tell like minded people what the sample is?

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
That all is very true, I did not take those into consideration, I apologize. But still, Marco Polo isn't exactly the coolest guy either for asking the WhoSampled team to take all his samples down. Both sides are to blame.

Jay Gumb$ said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Why would they sue Whosampled and not Wikipedia, the breaks, Youtube, some guy from some guys blog etc.

CellarDoor said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
This site does nothing illegal. They could simply make all the censored stuff public and nothing would happen. Marco can do nothing about it. By the way it would be pretty silly from artists to sue this site. They would just bring more attention to their own possible copyright violiations.

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Yeah I agree with Antoine. I don't want to disagree with anyone or create conflict as I apparently did with Hengist, but if anyone is to blame it's Marco Polo, not the WhoSampled team. The email we all got said "Removed at the request of the artist." meaning that Marco Polo personally contacted the WhoSampled team and asked them to take everything off and I'm guessing that if the WhoSampled team didn't do what Marco Polo asked, there would be legal consequences.

Tl;dr It's Marco Polo to blame, not the WhoSampled team.

What sucks is that I gained a lot of respect for him after this status http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10151230248124249&id=42853029248 but I just lost it all for him with this move.

antoine.becuwe said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
I totally understand that move! I don't get why they would risk to be sued! I mean they did what they had to, in legal terms. Don't blame them but Marco.

CellarDoor said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
I really don't get how an admin team can take such self destructing decisions. To all moderators, please quit! This site is not worth your work currently.

Sil van Liere said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Well, that sucks

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Argh, this really sucks...

Jay Gumb$ said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Nope. You are not alone.

Nazgeist (BeatProjekt) said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Come on Marco Polo, don't be that kind of guy :( I take it not only my Marco Polo submissions were taken down?

Azhar said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
wtf

Jay Gumb$ said on Monday, 28 January 2013:
Soooo.... only vocal scratches?
