cecil's post from 2010: "What I was asking is who's buying them? Who goes on iTunes looking to buy Ridin' Solo and thinks, "Well, I could buy Jason Derulo's version, or I could buy the Audiogroove version for the same price. Yes, Audiogroove is the one for me."

2012:
These "Audiogroove" guys have now hit #9 on the US Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart (a chart of the 25 songs below the Billboard Hot 100, making the song a #109 hit) with their cover of "Moves Like Jagger".

So, yeah, apparently some people do download this stuff. What they were thinking, I have no idea.

Good point. Maybe everyone who buys their cd buys thinking that its a compilation with the real artist and is left disappointed. Just check the following (and only) review of the cd on Amazon:

// if you are expecting the songs on this download to be by the actual artists, do not download. i do not feel that the description for this product was clear enough. all of the songs are performed by an outside group and they just mimic as best they can. the songs are not that bad, but i will be deleting it. i was looking for a real collection of real artists. //

Yeah, I realise that. What I was asking is who's buying them? Who goes on iTunes looking to buy Ridin' Solo and thinks, "Well, I could buy Jason Derulo's version, or I could buy the Audiogroove version for the same price. Yes, Audiogroove is the one for me."

How about the profit made from these covers? Maybe that's the reason they are created?

cecil said on Monday, 18 October 2010:
I'd imagine he's a series of session musicians. Well recreated as they are, I keep wondering what the market is for these. I know it's like a modern day version of those "Sounds like..." albums, but the tracks aren't cheaper than the originals on iTunes.

Hmmm, maybe he's not a real person?

@Jay Gumbs: My source for this artist is iTunes. There are no Wiki/Discogs links for this artist (that I know of). I couldn't even find an official website for the record label (Big Bite). Found a Twitter profile, but I am not sure it's the right label.

Could someone upload a pic of this artist? How about Wikipedia and Discog links?

Xanadu said on Thursday, 23 September 2010:
I rather listen to the originals myself, but you got to respect how well some covers are recreated. I agree, there isn't much "artistic value", but that would mean a lot of covers shouldn't be here...

Jay Gumb$ said on Thursday, 23 September 2010:
I hate to say this but whoever submitted these doesn't care that much about WhoSampled.

cecil said on Thursday, 23 September 2010:
I thought we were only supposed to submit covers with some "artistic value"?
