About Me

I have an appreciation for lots of different types of music thanks mainly to my parents especially my old man.

My Old Man and His Music

Growing up in the 80's and early 90's we had only one AM radio station so we had to listen to whatever they played. My old man bought a stereo set in the early 90's that had a phonograph, cd player (when many people didn't know about the technology), cassette player and radio.

I loved that stereo because I was fascinated by the record player and the other part of it that played the shiny mini "records". And because my old man had lots of old 60's, 70's and 80's records to play on them. So I listened to these music - lots of funk, soul, blues, rock, reggae like I remember he had the Superfly OST with Curtis Mayfiend on vinyl. James Taylor, Def Leppard, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Sam Cooke, Roy Orbison, Van Morrison, Loving Spoonful, Sly and the Family Stone, Grateful Dead, Steppenwolf and one of my favorites, Chuck Berry.

Apart from all that my mother was a Calypso singer from about '89 to 2000 and entered the competitions every year so I listened a lot of calypso and soca music as well as roots reggae and dancehall. My mother loved my old man's country records which I was forced to listen and developed a kinda liking for it - she mostly listened to David Allan Coe which to me was cool. I can't really stand country stuff today.

I Love Hip Hop

Hip hop though is where my heart is. The first hip hop album I'd ever listened to was LL Cool J's Mama Said Knock You Out which I had borrowed from one of my neighbors and I remember listening to that for about a week, dubbing it onto a cassette and asking him if he had any more like it.

However, it wasn't until about '97 when the island got it's first cable station that I was fully exposed to all the classic stuff and current stuff at the time through BET and I didn't want to listen to anything but Hip Hop. At the time Busta, LL, Wu, 2Pac and Bad Boy stuff was what I liked but I didn't really support any one rapper until I heard DMX drop some hard s*** on 4, 3, 2, 1. I didn't know which one was DMX because Canibus was also in the video and I didn't know him either. But X stood out and it seemed he had a different way of rhyming.

The first album I ever bought was It's Dark and Hell Is Hot. I even earned the nickname X when I was going to school cuz that was all I listened to. X had a crazy buzz back then, it's so sad what he's going through right now.

How I Ended up On WhoSampled

I've always loved making connections when I heard a certain song and it sounded like it came from somewhere else. I used to love when I heard familiar stuff and I could instantly say, hey "that song".

I used to read the credits on the cd liner notes and look for songs that had samples but most times it was only a few I knew but when Youtube was invented, I would go through the stuff I had and try to look for the artists. I even started a blog so that I could try to add the stuff I knew.

I'd always seen the WhoSampled site come up when I searched for some samples and for a couple months I just browsed it a little. Then about the time when Mariah had the cover of Foreigner's I Want to Know What Love Is, I noticed that Lucky Dube's cover wasn't on here and when I did a search he wasn't even on the site.

So that's when I signed up to submit Lucky Dube's cover of Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is.


I applied for moderator and have discovered and re-discovered so much different music as a result of being a part of this awesome site. Thanks to Spinks and the rest of the Staff for giving us the opportunity to explore music, it's roots and connections. Many have tried to do it but no one does it in such fine style.
